What is Occupational Therapy?

A career in Occupational Therapy (OT) is all about assisting people with mental, behavioral and emotional disorders to overcome the setbacks of their conditions and to make the most out of life. Originally, the idea of OT is to help people with occupations to maximize their functions by seeking ways how to make their works enjoyable for them and to make them more efficient and productive in what they do. The scope of the OT field is much wider than this though as it actually targets to help people, regardless of age, get to enjoy their lives and live it to the fullest. If you do not know what to take for college, Occupational Therapy (OT) is one of your many options. What sets OT from the other courses is that it educates to help people with disabilities maximize the exercise of functions.

The course goal is to produce professionals who can help people with disorders live as a normally as possible. OT, as a course, gets its elements from the different fields of sciences including Biology, Sociology, Psychology, Medicine and Normative Ethics. By learning occupational therapy, the graduates can seek ways to enhance the emotional and mental health of the patient to have better and useful perspectives in life. OT is different from PT or Physical Therapy. OT has broader applications as it is engaged with improving the physical and mental aspects of a person. PT, on the other hand, is limited with assisting to improve simply the motor aspect of a person like it helps the person walk and stand again, etc. OT is related but not totally the same with Psychology and Psychiatry in the sense that the latter two specialize in the diagnostic aspect, while OT deals with pure therapeutic means as a cure to support the diagnosis. While Psychology and Psychiatry prescribe drugs and give medical advice, OT more about assisting in the hands-on application of the medical advice and helping the patients overcome the disabling conditions.

Indeed, there are an immense number of courses that you can choose from in college. Yet, if you are passionate about helping others and have zeal towards the interesting field of the sciences, OT may be the right course for you.
When you study OT, you will learn how to deal with people by assisting them with their mental and emotional uniqueness. To have a career as an Occupational Therapist, you have to take a Master’s degree offered by Occupational Therapy Schools. I addition to the degree, it is also required to take the licensing exam administered by the National Certification Board for Occupational Therapy. OT assistant and aides, instead of taking Baccalaureate and Masters Degrees, can also take the programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy to qualify for the licensure exam.
